John Singer Sargent: The
Early Portraits, The Complete Paintings: Volume l, by Richard Ormond and Elaine Kilmurray in collaboration with Warren Adelson and Elizabeth Oustinoff was published in 1998 by Yale University Press, New Haven and London. The result of decades of scholarly research, Volume I catalogues Sargent's formal and informal portraits in oil and watercolor from 1874 through 1889. It is the first in the series of volumes of the definitive catalogue raisonné of the works of one of the most acclaimed artists of the nineteenth century. Entries are arranged chronologically and include biographical information about the sitter, as well as provenance, bibliography, and exhibition history of the works. |
