AN EXHIBITION AND SALE, ILLUSTRATING 150 YEARS OF AMERICAN PAINTING AT HOME AND ABROAD TO BE SHOWN AT ADELSON GALLERIES, INC. IN APRIL, 2003.

New York, NY (Winter 2003)-More than 60 important paintings, pastels and watercolors, by American artists ranging from Fitz Hugh Lane to Andrew Wyeth, many of which have not been seen in decades, will be exhibited at Adelson Galleries, Inc. in New York City from April 1-May 10, 2003. Beyond Native Shores: A Widening View of American Art, 1850 to 1975: An Exhibition and Sale will examine the theme of native painters who traveled within the United States and Europe in search of subject matter that they hoped would appeal to both the critical and popular audience at home. Celebrating a broad panorama, this exhibition will illuminate the growing appreciation and developing market enthusiasm by the public for a broader range of American paintings. Moving from marine and topographical subjects, popular in the first half of the 20th century, through the landscape and subject paintings that came to the fore around World War II, collecting taste has shifted in the past two decades toward American impressionism and modernism.
"We feel this collection illustrates in a tangible fashion the history of the American artist as a traveler, always looking for new and relevant subjects. Several paintings in the collection are from the families of the original owners and have never been exhibited before," said Warren Adelson, president of Adelson Galleries, Inc.
